Excessive use of drugs to treat gastric problems can lead to serious side effects, doctors at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) said today.

The country’s top-selling drug – called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in pharmacology – is being used indiscriminately and should be stopped immediately, they said at a seminar titled “Overuse of PPIs: A Review of emerging concerns” today.

“Not all stomach problems are stomach related and medications should not be taken without a proper prescription,” said Dr. Razibul Alam, Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at BSMMU, during the presentation of a speech at the event.

Majority of people as well as doctors associate common problems like diarrhea, constipation, different types of stomach pain with gastric problems and take or prescribe medication for it, he said.

He said: “Even when treating gastric problems, taking medication for more than eight weeks will be excessive. This can lead to malnutrition, dementia, cancer, and many other health complications.

Speaking as the chief guest, Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Vice Chancellor of BSMMU, said: “If we can maintain a disciplined diet, we won’t suffer from acidity and we won’t need medicine. “.

Seminar speakers also emphasized the judicious use of PPI drugs.
